Ever since my friend, Heidi, introduced me to Moscow mule at one of our favorite bars in LA, The Hudson, I’ve been hooked. It only seemed fitting that my roommate and I recreate the drink for her sister’s birthday party. But before finalizing our beverage choice, we had to hunt down the essential ingredient–mason jars. We were finally successful at Cost Plus World Market.
The tartness of the lime and sweetness of the ginger beer (which doesn’t contain alcohol) mask the flavor of the vodka–almost completely. So beware and don’t gulp these down too quickly!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day weekend…oh, it’s not Friday yet?
Recipe:
1 (12.7) fl. oz. Bundaberg Ginger Beer
3 fl. oz (2 shots) good quality vodka
1/2 lime juice, plus more to taste
1-2 slices of lime, per drink
Ice, if desired
Directions:
Pour ginger beer and vodka in mason jar. Squeeze lime juice into drink and stir. Garnish with lime slices. Add ice, if desired.
So. Good. and I hate vodka! Love the photos is this one, too.
I’m glad we converted you for one night!!
I love these photos too. Nice post. :)
How cool that you use Mason jars!! This would be great to pack up for a picnic! Have a great Labor Day…I’ve already adapted the Friday attitude!!
Aren’t they fun? I have a feeling you’ll be seeing them a lot in some upcoming posts. :) I convinced my roommate to buy 8, so that we both have 4 of our own. Hope you have a great weekend!
So jealous that you have a World Market near you!!! This drink looks super refreshing :)
It took everything in me to not buy every single thing in the store. I limited myself to just the mason jars. They have such great stuff there! Especially kitchen supplies. :)
I’ve never had a moscow mule and it sounds like the perfect things for Thirsty Thursday and this weekend! Going to have to give this a try for sure. Thx!
You’re so right, it’s perfect for Thirsty Thursday. We actually have one in our fridge right now. Just maybe I’ll indulge in one tonight. ;)
I have never tried this and although the name is deceiving, it looks delicious. The perfect way to start off an early long weekend =)
I completely agree! I’m in denial that it’s not Friday yet, ha!
I’ve never heard of this.. but I love the simply recipe. I’m becoming quite the drink maker for someone who doesn’t drink lol. And I love the mason jar presentation. Just love those jars.
They were great for the party because they required minimal effort to make. I love that you’re becoming good at this drink making thing. Your friends are going to love you even more! ;)
This looks sooo tasty! Def a good one for the LYK Relaxation Station ;) It’s making my mouth water even at 11am on a Thursday!
Oh it would be perfect for the relaxation station! I couldn’t agree more. Isn’t that the worst when it’s so early? Why must we do this to ourselves and look at food blogs all day, every day? Worth it!
This sounds yummy! Perfect for sitting out at the BBQ this weekend!
They would be great for a BBQ! Heck, I think I’d enjoy them at any time. ;)
I love ginger beer. :) Will have to try this!
I’d never tasted ginger beer before I started ordering Moscow mules at bars. (Embarrassingly, I didn’t know ginger beer doesn’t contain alcohol, ha!!)
Sounds delicious, I have never tried this. of course the Moscovites will not approve of this:)
Haha! Probably not. At least we can enjoy them? :)
I love that you are using mason jars. Just looking at the condensation on the outside reminds me of perfectly cold drinks throughout the summer.
I totally agree. At least it still feels like summer here in CA so I can keep drinking these for a bit longer. :)
I noticed I have no mason jars in my apartment. I’m going to have to pick some up!
I couldn’t believe I’d never bought any before now. Especially since they’re so cheap (and versatile)! I think these were around $1.50 per jar–not bad at all. I’m already tempted to buy more. :)
Uh, yeah! These would for a very nice celebration this weekend. Thanks for sharing. Do you live in the L.A. area? I am in Burbank!
Of course! I’m thinking I’ll make some for my family when I visit home. Yes, I do! I’m near West Hollywood…we’re so close!
Nope…not Friday yet. I sure wish it was though! And this sounds delicious Caroline. I’ve never heard of this drink, but wow…the flavors!!!! And those mason jars are adorable! Have a great long weekend!
Just getting back online and NOW it’s Friday…thank God!! Haha. Aren’t they great flavors? I’m so glad my friend introduced the drink to me. I’m hooked now. Hope you have a great weekend as well Kristy. :)
Give us some notice next time we’ll get you mason jars! Kidding, we have probably one actual Mason jar. That ginger beer looks awesome and so does the drink.
Well nowwww ya tell me! Ha. Thanks so much, it was pretty tasty. I may or may not have had more than one….
Woo hoo, you’re Freshly Pressed. Awesome!
I couldn’t figure out why I kept getting notifications on my phone for people “liking” this post. Finally figured it out, ha! Woo!
The last time I saw jars used as a drinking glass was when I was in Malaysia, initially I thought it was odd as they use all sorts of shape and sizes but actually I realized it gave the restaurant that character and it looks nice as well
That’s too cool! I completely agree, they definitely add character, and I think make the drink look even more appealing. Hope you have a great weekend!
Looks great! Wal-Mart sells mason jars also. :)
Great to know!! I’ll take a trip there if I need to replenish…or to just expand my collection. ;)
The name of this drink is soo cute..love the presentation in jars.
I know, I love the name too. Not relevant to the flavors at all, but that’s OK!
this is my type of drink, perfect for a summers day!
I completely agree! My kind of drink too…refreshing and doesn’t taste like pure alcohol. :)
I know nothing about cocktails so I nearly made a complete fool of myself by coming along and saying “hai, this isn’t a moscow mule” and I then I realised I was thinking of white russians and didn’t actually have any idea what a moscow mule is (lol), but I *love* ginger beer so if it has that inside then I’m thinking I’d love it! Cute pics with the mason jar too!
HAHA you’re too funny. You would definitely love it if you like ginger beer, especially since it’s the primary flavor–it’s one whole bottle of ginger beer, then just a bit of lime juice and vodka. It’s also great that the ginger beer masks the flavor of the vodka. Are you a fan of white russians? My brother loves them, but I just can’t get myself to drink them. Too thick I guess?
Ooh yummy – what a fabulous drink. Love ginger beer – never thought of adding it to anything other than a beer before for a shandy.
Have a happy long Labor Day weekend.
:-) Mandy
I didn’t either until I was introduced to this drink. It’s delicious! Thanks so much Mandy, hope you have a great weekend as well. :) xx
I’ve never had a moscow mule….it sounds so interesting!
Funny name, but they’re really tasty! One of my favorite cocktails now.
I’m guessing Moscow Mule has a quite a kick!
You’re just always quick on your feet with witty comebacks, aren’t ya? haha Hope you have a great weekend!
What a lovely drink! So refreshing looking.
Cheers,
Rosa
Very refreshing! Have a lovely weekend. :) xx
Very nice… this is the kind of dangerously delicious drink that would go down so easily, you wouldn’t realize its power until you try and stand up! Love it. Have a great weekend Caroline.
It is exactly the kind of drink you just described! We definitely experienced that after drinking a few, haha. Hope you have a great weekend too! xx
Yum! This looks perfect for a nice relaxing labor day weekend. Hope you have a great one!
Maybe I’ll whip some up over the weekend when I’m visiting home and make my family try one. I have a feeling they’d approve. :) Hope you have a lovely weekend as well!
These looks so refreshing and great. I want one right now (and it’s only 9:22am) where I am. Happy Labor Day!
If only it were considered appropriate to drink at 9:22 a.m., then you’d be all set. I mean, it IS Friday, right? haha! Have a great weekend. :)
This looks delicious and dangerous; I’ve been known to gulp a but quickly when the burn isn’t there!
Will you believe me if I say I have never tasted ginger beer, not to mention the Moscow Mule? It looks delicious (I love such deceptive cocktails!) and making it would be a perfect occasion to taste the beer too! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
I have never heard of Moscow mule…but it sounds great! It looks like it could be a dangerous mix! ;)
That looks absolutely refreshing – and perfect for a holiday weekend drink! (And I’ve never heard of ginger beer, but I think I’ll have to pick some up.)
Atta girl! Cocktails for Labor Day! All great minds really do think alike, if I do say so myself, and now I have a use for all those empty canning jars I’ve got lying around. Brilliant!
Nice and simple, and looks delicious!! I pretty much love anything served in mason jars :)
A great way to enjoy the long holiday weekend. I can see myself sitting on the dock with this one.
This sounds like a fun drink to serve this weekend!
Wow! I’ve never heard of ginger beer. All the varieties of flavors of drinks amaze me!
gorgeous, we actually use the mason jars to drink out of too! They are so tough.. lovely shots.. c
Congrats on making Freshly Pressed… AGAIN! ;)
Ha, thank you! xx
I must try this before the winter gets here :)
looks interesting! thanks
http://www.JavidSuleymanli.com/
Definitely need to try this
Mmmm, sounds good : ) My drink of choice is the same exact ingredients, except rum instead of vodka, so I’ll have to try it with vodka. Thank you!
This is definitely my favorite drink!! Some bars serve them in copper cups for the reaction between the ginger beer and the copper. I think I could drink just about anything out of a copper cup!
I’ve never tasted this drink in a copper cup, but I’m going to have to give it a try. You’ve got me curious!
Congratulations on making freshly pressed. In so excited for you as it is such an honor. I know how happy I was when I found out that I had made freshly pressed. Keep up the good work.
Aw, thank you so much Karen! It was a great surprise. :)
This sounds soo good! Shall have to try it out :D Luv how you’ve poured it into a jam jar as well, noice presentation idea – would be really cool for a party! :D
love anything in a mason jar!
-grace
I LOve drinking from Mason jars! The recipe sounds divine, I’ll try it!
Sarah
My favorite drink of the summer! In total agreement that The Hudson has the best one in town…but if you are looking for a close second visit The Next Door Lounge on Highland. Both are amazing!
Never heard of it, but I’ll have to make a visit. I love finding new places. Thanks for the suggestion!
Yum! Sounds delicious!
Mmm looks like an interesting concoction…
OMG! Delicious!!! I want to try this!!!!!
I love a good Moscow Mule, but we were always taught that they must be served in stainless steel cups.
So I’ve heard! I’ve got to give it a try.
I love love love Ginger Beer, so I am absolutely going to try this. Thanks for posting. :)
Sounds like it would taste like gin and tonic. Maybe it’s just the lime…
I’ve never heard of Ginger Beer… and I’m intrigued!!!
What does it taste like and where do you get it?
It’s delicious! I bought this particular ginger beer at Cost Plus World Market, but I’m sure you can get it at markets like Whole Foods or Sprouts.
Sounds like a great recipe! Thanks for sharing.
Looks yumm..
Good for me who can’t handle alcohol!
Will try it tonight :)
You can’t even taste the alcohol, so you’d be just fine!
It looks so refreshing….
What a fun, cute, little DIY cocktail – love it!
I would think if this drink is name Mule. It might just kick like one if you had a bit too much.
Stay Sober as best you can my Friend.
Mark

I think it just might do that, you’re right!
I love mason jars as drinking cups and vases! Nice placement and yummy beverage! My fiance doesn’t drink alcohol but he loves ginger…maybe I will make a virgin for him ;)
These photos are great! They are tempting me to do some food photography as my next photo project I’ll probably do them tomorrow and the next day and perhaps post them by next week onto my blog! Thanks for inspiring me!
I look forward to seeing the post!
My cousin always orders this when I go out with him and I always laugh. I’ll have to give it a shot, and who knows, maybe I’ll be ordering it next time!
Thanks, and congrats on being Freshly Pressed! :)
You should definitely give it a try. Thank you!
This is also one of my favourite drinks. If you can get hold of ‘bitters’, add three drops to your recipe and see what you think.
Sounds interesting…thanks for the suggestion!
For total camouflage, replace the slices of lime with two clean paintbrushes.

Heyy that’s pretty good there!!…would like to check out my blog as well!!…Got quite a bit of recipes hoverin in there….hehe!! http://letrezblog.wordpress.com
OMG the tartness of the lime and the sweetness of the ginger beer – TOTALLY sold! Like your post!
wow, great pictures!! do these taste great?!
They’re delicious, you should whip some up. :)
good photographs….! very much clear…!
One of my favourite drinks, and so easy to make, I had it in mind to make it last weekend, I came home loaded with limes and vodka and forgot the ginger beer. Just aswell I won’t tackle a long island iced tea as I’d only remember the ice!
Bundaberg brings back memories of my Australia trip last year
Ha! Well, at least you can still make some tasty drinks with those ingredients. :)
Looks delicious and i will definitely be trying that! Great blog!
I LOVE Moscow Mules! They are really wonderfully refreshing! I’m glad to see a freshly pressed page dedicated to these great cocktails!
Though I don’t think the original recipe calls for it, I like cucumber in mine!
Wow this looks like a delicious beverage!
Wonder why is it called “Moscow” Mule? I am from Russia myself and it is the first time I see such a beverage.
This sounds delicious! I actually have a few ginger beers in my fridge. I love the taste of ginger and the lime must give this a nice lift, too. Yum!
Delicious… Fentimans is also another brand of Ginger Beer you should try out with this cocktail (it’s often used in Dark and Stormys)!
I’ll have to try it out. My friend loves dark & stormys, so maybe I’ll use that ginger beer for both drinks. :)
You know how cute little kids have lemonade stands, well I propose that you buy a mule, attach a two wheeled cart, and sell these out the back. You´d kill it haha!
HA! Clever idea, I like where you’re head’s at. I think that stand would be a hit.
Beyond yummy, simply out of this world incredible. So tempting and so beautiful
I just had a dark and stormy for the first time. Something like this but with rum. So good!

Nice! cant wait to give it a try I’d have to add just a lil more vodka tho ;]
Can’t ever go wrong with a little more vodka. :)
My mouth’s beginning to water out here…
Usually I would shy away from anything with “Mule” in it, but this sounds delish! Thanks for sharing.
I recently made these while camping and they were such a hit. I got my recipe from Oprah’s camping adventure in Yosemite. It has now been deemed camping tradition going forward that I make these every time I go camping. I have been told that copper mugs make all the difference… I will need to try it out…
What a great camping tradition! I’ve heard that about the copper mugs too. I’m going to give it a try next time.
[…] Our Labor Day celebration required some appropriately festive libations to quench the thirst and satisfy the palates, and during holiday weekends the Glutton household usually aims for the alcohol trifecta (beer, wine, liquor for the drinking novice). We started off with something that Sweet Caroline shared last week on her blog, the Moscow Mule. Described as deceptive and delicious, I failed to take this fantastic concoction seriously until 3/4 of the way through my first jar (see above). Then suddenly the world became a calmer more peaceful place and I knew the afternoon was off to the a great start (ok…I’m embelleshing a little, but there is a pleasant kick to head with this drink). Many thanks to Caroline and be sure to check out the recipe by clicking here. […]
wow..
Great recipe. These are delicious! … and mason jars are just too dang cute.
Sounds refreshing.
Awesome! I just had these for my birthday as well and they are sooooo good. I’m also in LA and would recommend trying them at STK on La Cienega. Thanks for all the info. This may be my new favorite drink!
I’ve never been there, I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks so much!
